He studied drama at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and then went on to become a leading figure in the experimental theater company The Performance Group.
Willem’s career in film began in 1981 with his role in Heaven’s Gate, although his breakthrough performance came three years later with the Vietnam War epic Platoon. This role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and made him a household name.
