The building that houses the museum was built in 1719 by Hans Herr, head of a Mennonite community. It was originally a five-room log home, with a bake oven and smokehouse outside. In the 19th century, the house was enlarged to include three more rooms and a large porch. The interior of the house is filled with original pieces of furniture made by local craftsmen and original artifacts from the time period. In addition to its historical significance, the building's architecture is also noteworthy. The ceilings are supported by wood braces and are slightly vaulted. The hand-hewn beams and wooden shutters are original as well as many of the walls and floors.
