The school was founded in 1908 by James Lide Coker as the Newberry Cotton Oil Company School of Commerce and Finance. Coker’s mission was to provide quality education to male students from rural South Carolina. Over the years, the school evolved from a business college to a liberal arts college and eventually achieved university status in 2014.
