Situated at the demilitarized zone near Andrews Air Force Base in Camp Springs, Maryland, the Airmen Memorial Museum is a nationally recognized, award-winning center of history, education and appreciation of the U.S. Air Force. Founded in 1988 and dedicated to preserving the service and sacrifice of Airmen of every generation, this unique museum has experienced over 1.2 million visitors since opening.
The Museum’s origins began in 1983 with a small group of U.S. Air Force officers who sought to establish a living memorial to their fallen brothers and sisters. The Museum began its growth in the warehouses and hangars near Joint Base Andrews and eventually relocated to its present facility in 1988. The Museum offers a chance to immerse yourself in American military history with one-of-a-kind artifacts, interactive experiences, photographs, documents, and artifacts of all varieties that commemorate the service of Airmen for more than 75 years since the U.S. Air Force was established in 1947.
One of the museum’s main attractions is their aircraft collection that showcases models from World War II to current times with aircraft such as C-141B Starlifter cargo plane, F-4C Phantom II fighter jet, and the Nuclear Weapons Trainer C-130E Hercules all displayed for visitors to enjoy. Throughout six themed exhibit areas – Heritage, Flight Sciences, Air Power Evolution, Rise of Technology, Peacekeepers, and tribute to Airmen – visitors are able to experience an unparalleled look into our nation’s air power history.
The museum also offers a number of special programs, talks and events throughout the year such as educational tours for schools, lectures on air power history, question sessions with retired USAF officers, annual symposiums focused on various topics related to air power such as space exploration and innovation in aviation technology.
