The site served as an immigration processing station from 1910 to 1940 and symbolized the nation’s struggle between open immigration policies and concerns over national security. During this time period, over one million immigrants were processed on Angel Island before being allowed to enter the United States.
Visitors to the museum can explore exhibits about the history of immigration to Angel Island and learn about the struggles faced by those who were detained there. In addition to exhibits, the museum conducts guided tours through the grounds where visitors can experience first-hand what life was like for those who were detained there.
The museum also hosts several special events throughout the year such as lectures, performances and outdoor movie screenings. From May through October visitors can enjoy Sunset BBQs featuring live music from local artists.
