It was the year 1867 and the small town of Charlotte, North Carolina, was in a state of great excitement. For a new university had been established in the area and it was called Johnson C Smith University.
The university was founded by a prominent Charlotte businessman, Henry B. Smith and his wife, Anna Elizabeth Smith. They wanted to create a place where African Americans could get a college education without discrimination or prejudice. Their dream was to open doors of opportunity that had been closed to many people of color.
So they set out to create a college that focused on practical knowledge and the development of character among its students. With their own personal funds, they established an endowment for the university and invited local African American leaders to serve on its board of trustees.
The first classes were held in 1867 with just 10 students in attendance. In the years that followed, Johnson C Smith University quickly grew into one of the most prestigious Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the country.
