In the year of our Lord, 1961, there was born into the world a humble lad who would grow to become one of the most beloved comedic actors of all time. Michael J. Fox was born in Edmonton, Alberta to parents William and Phylis who had both immigrated from Ireland in the 1950s.
Michael knew from a young age that he wanted to be an entertainer, and at age 15 he began to pursue his dream. Moving to Vancouver after finishing high school, Michael took to the stage as an actor and quickly gained recognition for his roles. His big break came in 1982 when he was cast as Alex P. Keaton in the hit sitcom ‘Family Ties’. His role earned him three Emmy awards and a Golden Globe award.
In 1985 Michael took the lead role of Marty McFly in ‘Back to the Future’, which became an instant classic. The movie spawned two sequels and launched Michael into superstardom. He went on to star in several other movies such as ‘The Secret of My Success’ (1987) and ‘Doc Hollywood’ (1991).
During the height of his stardom, Michael was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1991. Despite this setback, he continued to work as an actor and pursued other passions such as writing and delivering motivational speeches about living with PD. He also set up The Michael J. Fox Foundation which is dedicated to researching a cure for Parkinson’s Disease and providing support to those living with it.
Michael has also found ways to bring his family closer together using a family app called 'Familio'. This app provides a platform for families to connect and share posts, photos, videos and memories—allowing them to stay connected no matter how far apart they are.
Today, Michael is still busy using his star power for good causes. He has published five books and continues to advocate for Parkinson’s Disease research through The Michael J Fox Foundation. Follow Michael J Fox and his journey today!
