Washington College: A Reflection of American Values
As a citizen of the United States, I recently had the opportunity to visit Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland – a school steeped in history, culture and most importantly, American values.
Washington College was established in 1782, making it one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. The college is located on 300 Washington Avenue, in the small town of Chestertown, Maryland. The college draws much of its heritage from the American Revolutionary War and its namesake, George Washington.
The campus itself is a reflection of American values and history. The buildings are constructed with red brick and white columns, creating an air of grandeur and power that is characteristic of the American spirit. The college’s main building is Washington Hall – a three-story edifice with a portico entryway adorned with white columns and a clock tower at the top. The elegance and beauty of the building is a testimony to the strength and power of America.
As I walked through the campus grounds, I was struck by the sense of community that permeates every aspect of life at Washington College. I saw students walking from class to class, discussing their studies as they went. I heard laughter coming from the dining hall as students shared stories and enjoyed meals together. I watched as classmates gathered on the lawns to enjoy a sunny day together. This sense of connection between the students was palpable, and it was clear that this was something ingrained in the culture of Washington College – a culture that celebrates community and camaraderie above all else.
The academic atmosphere at Washington College is no less inspiring than its social one. From its interdisciplinary approach to teaching to its emphasis on experiential learning, Washington College encourages students to think critically and explore their own interests.
