Welcome to 1812 Homestead, the museum located at 4403 NY-22, in the beautiful town of Willsboro, NY 12996. Born out of a desire to preserve the history of the region, this historic site allows visitors to experience a slice of life from 1812 America.
Upon entering the grounds of 1812 Homestead, visitors find themselves surrounded by buildings steeped in history. From the Ranger house to the barn, this museum is decked out with carefully constructed log cabins and hand-built buildings that reflect life two centuries ago. The Ranger house is particularly notable, as it was owned by General Isaac Clark’s son-in-law – a hero from the War of 1812. Throughout their tour of the grounds, visitors can view replica weapons firing demonstrations, a vegetable garden and rare artifacts on loan from other area museums.
Head inside the museum for an interactive look at life during the War of 1812. Guided tours are available as well as self-directed tours through time. Demonstrations showcase musket firing techniques, wool spinning and dyeing by local artisans, and other activities like open hearth cooking. All these activities are presented with a goal of giving visitors an education on early American life for those who lived before and during one of America’s most pivotal conflicts. Visitors will leave with a new appreciation of our nation’s history and resources.
The whole family can join in on the fun at 1812 Homestead – children especially enjoy hands-on activities like learning how to play old-fashioned games and churning butter! There’s also an exhibit dedicated to how childhood changed over time, as well as jurist’s houses with artifacts that further bring these cultural changes to life.
