(call to action).
Welcome to the African American Community Association of Jefferson County, a museum that engages and educates our larger community on the vast and vibrant history of the African American people in the United States.
Established in the early 70s, this museum has been a catalyst for promoting understanding of African American cultural heritage through various sources such as archives, artifacts, seminar presentations, and workshops. Our focus is to amplify African American narratives and acknowledge it as both an important tribute to our culture, history, and achievements.
The museum highlights the struggle for Emancipation and integration, as well as the major milestones and victories that have been achieved by African Americans as we have moved from subjugation to civil rights. For example, this museum covers topics such as the role of Black people in forming the United States government, ending slavery, becoming citizens, gaining Civil Rights, and becoming a recognized part of our society.
Additionally, this institution provides educational opportunities for the general public with its diversified collection of lectures, documentaries and community programs. Each event poses unique opportunities to explore African American issues such as poverty, incarceration rates, health disparities, job discrimination, racism and other social forces that threaten our communities.
The museum offers both permanent and temporary exhibitions addressing these issues. Among some of these exhibits are “The Intersection of Race and Immigration” which explores how racial or ethnic background affects how immigrants are viewed in society; “Cultural Inheritance” which investigates how clothing styles and music influence each generation’s sense of identity; “Living Legacies” which highlights historic women activists who laid the groundwork for civil rights; and “Centering Blackness in History” which focuses on currently overlooked African-American contributions made in areas such as Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) fields.
At the African American Community Association of Jefferson County we strive to recognize existing disparities in society while promoting appreciation of all cultures. We are dedicated to being a resource for people wishing to understand their history and make an effort to create meaningful dialogue between people of different backgrounds. We encourage open dialogue between diverse groups and aim to empower members of our communities.
At the African American Community Association of Jefferson County we believe knowledge is liberation and seek to engage our guests for meaningful conversations about race relations and justice. Our ultimate goal is to foster an environment that is both safe and educational with events that propel us forward towards social justice within our communities. Come join us at Po Box 843 to explore this journey with us!
