ALBANY TOWNSHIP HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Founded in 1966, the Albany Township Historical Society has been preserving the rich history of Kempton, Pennsylvania and its surrounding area for more than 50 years. Located at 404 Old Philly Pike, the museum holds artifacts and collections that document the stories of the many people who have lived in this community since its founding in 1756.

The museum's extensive permanent collection includes items such as documents, photographs, textiles, furniture, tools, and books dating all the way back to colonial America, providing a unique glimpse into the lives of those who lived before us. Among the highlights of this collection are artifacts from local businesses, like the Maxatawny Foundry which operated in nearby Maxatawny from 1865-1971. These artifacts are a testament to the hard work of generations of locals and a reminder of how integral industry has been in this community's growth and development.

The museum also regularly acquires new artifacts from local residents who have connections to the past. These acquisitions help create an ever-evolving representation of this community's history and allow for a more complete understanding of how successive generations have adapted to and shaped Kempton and its neighboring towns.

The Albany Township Historical Society also provides educational programs to encourage an interest in and appreciation for history, as well as an array of activities like lectures, biographical presentations and field trips that bring alive these stories from the past. The society even offers free genealogy classes to help residents trace their family history in this region.

At any given time, visitors can find several exhibits on display at the museum, ranging from explorations of local industry to personal accounts of individuals who lived in this area. A few examples include "Kempton Quilts: A Fabric Story" which focused on quilting traditions in Kempton and nearby towns, "Maxatawny Foundry: The Metalsmiths of Maxatawny" which showcased pieces created by Maxatawny's metalworkers, and "Civil War Soldiers: Voices from Lehigh County" which featured personal artifacts and documents from locals who fought in the Civil War.

The Albany Township Historical Society Museum is a valuable resource both to those who wish to better understand their community's past, as well as those who are simply curious about what life was like in this part of Pennsylvania in previous generations.
