Allegan County Historical Society

The Allegan County Historical Society has been a part of the community since 1966, when it was founded by a dedicated group of volunteer citizens who wanted to preserve the history of their home county. Located in the charming town of Allegan, Michigan, the museum is nestled in an historic building, the former Carnegie Library, built in 1902 and now on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum hosts a variety of exhibitions of artifacts, photographs and documents that reflect the history of Allegan County from its earliest days up to the present. Highlights include a unique collection of antique clocks and watches dating back to the early 1800s, an extensive library covering more than four centuries of Allegan County history, and a selection of vintage toys, tools and household items. In addition to permanent collections, the museum hosts a variety of temporary exhibits throughout the year ranging from local history to art and culture.

The museum offers a range of programs, lectures and special events specifically designed to engage and educate visitors about the history and culture of Allegan County and beyond. Other offerings include workshops on local genealogy, guided tours of historic sites around Allegan County and presentations on topics like Native American culture and Michigan's early industry.

The museum also serves as a resource for local history research, providing library access for visitors who are interested in furthering their exploration.
