The Alta District Historical Society Museum is a treasure-trove of history located in Dinuba, California. The museum was established in 1945 and is dedicated to sharing the stories and artifacts of one of California’s earliest agricultural districts.
For over three generations, the museum has preserved and shared the history of the Alta District. From the days when horse-drawn buggies brought produce to market, to the days of post-World War II development, Alta District has been a witness to incredible changes. The museum’s collection includes an impressive array of artifacts, photographs and documents dating back nearly 150 years. Visitors can explore vintage farm tools and equipment, photographs of crops and farm buildings and records related to local business and citizens. The exhibits bring to life the stories of early settlers, farmers, merchants, ranchers and their families.
Another highlight is the antique car and horse-drawn wagon collection. Vintage cars include a unique array of models from 1902 through the 1940s. The horse-drawn wagons showcase how early settlers’ transportation looked like. Displays also include historic guns, tools and other memorabilia related to rural community life in Alta District.
More than just a museum, Alta District Historical Society is a community resource that facilitates important research projects related to local history. Through its archival collections, community annals project and library research program, it helps promote interest in local history while connecting it to wider historical context.
The museum also hosts multiple events throughout the year including lectures, workshops, field trips and family activities. Coming up this summer is Ranch Life Revival – a fun event that features activities such as wagon rides, horse shoe pitching, livestock shows and other interactive programs highlighting the culture of ranch life.
