American Italian Cultural Center

Welcome to the American Italian Cultural Center in New Orleans, LA - the city's foremost repository of Italian art, culture, and history! For over 30 years, the American Italian Cultural Center has worked to explore and promote Italian culture in America.

From the breathtaking beauty of marble statues in the Great Classic Hall and the eternal verve of timeless Renaissance masterpieces, to the intriguing artifacts of a bustling émigré population where pre- and post-American Revolution wars accompanied a deep-seated tradition of art and music, the Center seeks to ensure that their story and culture are never forgotten.

The Great Classic Hall, home to the Museum's most cherished paintings and sculptures, offers visitors a refreshing taste of history. Its collections represent more than 400 years of Italian art and design - from classical paintings to Renaissance frescoes to Baroque sculptures.

The vivid energy of Italian culture shines through the halls with its stunning collection of paintings as well as tapella - a type of wood carving technique popular in centuries past. Bearded men in thick coats peer out from beneath strong shoulders. Ladies in extravagant gowns stand proudly with their hands placed on their hips. This splendid timeline stands testament to Italy's culture and its influence across centuries.

Meanwhile, the Center's American Italian Émigré Experience takes guests through a journey of Italian immigrants, who crossed the sea from their homelands seeking opportunities and freedom in their newfound country. Through artwork, artifacts, and stories this experience brings to life the struggles faced by these émigrés who eventually found success despite the odds.

Equally intriguing is the Center's selection of documents, photographs, and stories related to the vibrant family life experienced by the new immigrants. While visits are limited due to Covid-19 safety regulations, curious minds can still appreciate these treasures through its website. Here historians of all backgrounds can learn about how these courageous Italians brought with them Cuisine as well as Music, fashion and even Arts, inspiring an entire nation to enjoy their culture all year round.

No visit would be complete without an obligatory stop at The Gift Shop filled with numerous reminders from your visit: from pieces themed around Italy's most beloved treasures (such as Venetian sea glass jewelry), or books about Italy or Italians that tell stories about its citizens or its ancient heritage for those who like something to remember by. The Store is sure to provide a special item representing what was learned during one's visit.

But if The Gift Shop doesn't have that perfect souvenir - not to worry! The Center also provides customized gift baskets filled with Italian foods (such as pastas, wines, cookies) themed around Italian art and culture - perfect for any gifting occasion!
