Hidden away on Springs Avenue in historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania lies a valuable gem of the past: the Adams County Historical Society. This illustrious organization seeks to preserve and interpret the history of South Central Pennsylvania’s Adams County, which spans from the Battles of Gettysburg to the local folklore from the surrounding townships.
Since 1951, ACHS has welcomed visitors and students from near and far to take part in the learning experience one can only find in the museum’s walls. With more than 5,700 square feet filling their three floors, the museum has much to offer, including an array of artifacts, Galleries and Exhibits, Experiential Learning Programs, Genealogical Researches, Books and Archives, Special Events and more.
The permanent collection includes Civil War artifacts, rare books, furniture spanning 250 years of history that gives visitors a unique look at not only Adams County but rural Pennsylvania. For example, a tour of the third floor will take guests through a variety of hand-crafted pieces such as pottery and textiles that tell the stories of people who lived in the area. It’s a unique way to understand how generations before us lived on the land from then till now.
In addition to its artifacts and physical collection, ACHS also offers a variety of experiential learning programs for all ages. Whether you are interested in playing old-time nineteenth century games for Fun Fridays or joining their team for an archaeological dig at an historic site, visitors will be sure to gain an adventure at ACHS. The Society also offers genealogical research for those interested in finding more about their family’s history.
It is no secret that those visiting ACHS can pick up one of the many books and archives on display or take part in some special events. For example, every year several different Civil War reenactments take place at Gettysburg National Military Park while a number Indigenous cultures gather to perform traditional ceremonies like potlatch illustrating the ongoing colonial effects here in our own backyard.
