Adams County Historical Society

Welcome to Adams County Historical Society, located in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Since its founding in 1916, the museum has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Adams County with all who visit.

The museum offers various exhibits and programs for both adults and children. Visitors can browse through our extensive collections of artifacts, photographs, documents, and audio/visual materials that tell the stories of Adams County from its beginnings to today.

Our primary exhibition is “The Civil War in Adams County” which allows visitors to explore the effects of the conflict on the community through artifacts, interactive media displays, and documents from before, during and after the battle. The stories of those who lived through this tumultuous period are also highlighted.

In addition to our core exhibit, the museum also offers a wide variety of activities to keep visitors engaged. Our Education Department hosts regular programs for both adults and children including lectures, workshops, and fieldtrips that focus on topics such as Civil War medical practices and 19th century photography.

We also host a variety of special events throughout the year such as reenactments of historic battles, storytelling sessions for kids, and our ever-popular Living History Day at Historic Fairfield. A visit to our museum will not only leave you with a greater appreciation for Adams County’s history but also provide a number of fun and interesting activities.

At Adams County Historical Society we strive to create a unique educational experience through our resources and programs. Our commitment is to provide everyone with a meaningful insight into the history of Adams County and its people that will be remembered for generations.
