Eastern Michigan University is a public research university located in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Founded in 1849, it is the second oldest university in the state, and has a long and storied history.
The first classes at EMU were held in 1853, in a building known as University Hall. The school was originally founded as Michigan State Normal School (MSNS) with the mission of training teachers for the local schools. As the school grew and evolved, it was renamed Eastern Michigan University in 1959.
Today, EMU is a comprehensive public university with over 20,000 students, more than 200 undergraduate and graduate programs, and eight colleges offering degrees in business, education, health sciences, technology, and more. EMU is home to world-renowned research facilities such as the College of Technology's Science Lab and the College of Education's Child Development Center.
The campus itself is vibrant and beautiful. With many buildings that date back to the 1800s and early 1900s, the buildings on campus showcase a variety of architectural styles including Greek Revival, Beaux Arts, Tudor Revival, and Richardsonian Romanesque. After a day of classes or work on campus, students can take a break in one of the many green spaces on EMU's campus including the historic Water Tower Park or The Greenhouse.
