1719 Hans Herr House

The Hans Herr House is an iconic piece of American history nestled in the peaceful town of Willow Street, Pennsylvania. This 18th century house was home to Hans Herr, his wife Anna Barbara, and their vast family of 11 children. The structure is the only pre-revolutionary war home open to the public and is a registered national landmark. This iconic house offers amazing insight into the American colonial life and is an entertaining destination for all ages.

The house itself was constructed in 1719 and was originally owned by Hans Herr, a German immigrant who had just settled in Pennsylvania. It was common at the time for immigrants such as Herr to build their homes from limestone and bricks, which were abundant natural resources in the area. The house has 4 rooms and a total of 2,400 square feet of space which was surprisingly roomy for the 11 members of the Herr household. It is the oldest Mennonite House of Worship still standing today and has become an important part of Pennsylvania's cultural heritage.

At the Hans Herr House Museum, visitors can take a self-guided audio tour to explore all four original rooms, as well as outbuildings, and a colonial garden. During the tour, visitors can learn about the lives of the Herr family including the daily struggles they faced as immigrants trying to make a new home in America. Visitors can also get a glimpse into Pennsylvania's colonial life with exhibits on their clothing styles, furniture designs, farming techniques, and more. The museum also includes artifacts from past generations, giving guests an even deeper understanding of the history behind this unique house.

The Hans Herr House Museum offers many special events throughout the year including Colonial Christmas and Colonial Summer Programs. During these events, visitors can learn more about Pennsylvania's colonial culture through activities such as open hearth cooking demonstrations and candle-dipping. These educational events are great for anyone interested in Pennsylvania's heritage or anyone looking for a fun day out with family and friends.

With its picturesque setting and fascinating history, it’s no wonder why thousands of visitors flock to this 18th century home every year. Explore Pennsylvania’s rich colonial culture at the historic Hans Herr House and take part in this important part of American history! Plan your visit today!
