LærerIntra is a web-based program for handling daily routines for teaching

About American College of the Building Arts

Welcome to the American College of the Building Arts located in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina! This college is one of the only few dedicated to teaching the practice of traditional building crafts such as blacksmithing, stone-carving, and architectural metalwork. By combining historically accurate design, classic craftsmanship, and modern materials, ACBA produces artisans who master their crafts while preserving our built heritage.

At ACBA students can choose from six concentrations: Architectural Crafts, Finish Carpentry, Masonry Arts, Ornamental Metalwork, Traditional Building Arts, and Woodworking and Carpentry. They receive hands-on training that includes knowledge of materials, tools and equipment, mathematics, safety and building code requirements, design principles and sketching. Through project-based learning our students gain expertise in the trades that is invaluable in the real world.

Graduates at ACBA can look forward to a range of career opportunities including architectural metalwork specialists, blacksmiths, stone masons, and woodworkers with employers ranging from banks and other commercial buildings to art galleries or local history museums. Our graduates put their skills to work in building construction and renovation projects while restoring monuments of historic significance and creating custom work for interior designers, public institutions and private homes.

The College also boasts industry certifications that can help students get ahead in their respective fields. Examples of such certifications include the National Environmental Balancing Bureau’s certifications for “Balance Technicians” or “Balance Authorities” which certify a student’s ability to set up and maintain various test instruments for balance systems. Additionally, ACBA works with organizations such as the American Plans Exchange Service to provide our students with access to over 500 sample plans from leading companies—opening up yet another avenue for job possibilities.

At ACBA we believe that the best way to honor craftsmanship is by keeping its traditions alive. Our experts ensure our skilled professional development courses remain on the cutting edge of modern techniques while taking an honest look back at our past—ensuring that tradition remains alive today.
